But how much does a lithium battery cost in Nigeria?

The answer depends on many reasons like, battery capacity, voltage, brand, battery chemistry and quality of the battery management system (BMS).

In this guide, we will look at current lithium battery prices in Nigeria, explain the different capacities, and show you how to choose the right battery for your solar system.

More usable energy

You generally don’t need to treat a lithium battery the same way you would a lead-acid battery when deciding how much of its capacity can be used.

Faster charging

Lithium batteries can often accept higher charging currents, provided the battery and system are designed for it.

Lower maintenance

Most modern LiFePO4 batteries do not require the type of regular maintenance associated with flooded lead-acid batteries.

Smaller and lighter

For the same useful energy storage, lithium can be considerably smaller and lighter than lead-acid batteries.

This is important question to ask because many people compare batteries simply by looking at the Ah number.

For example:

12V 100Ah

has a nominal energy capacity of:

12 × 100 = 1,200Wh

or approximately:

1.2kWh

While on the other hand:

48V 100Ah

battery has:

48 × 100 = 4,800Wh

or:

4.8kWh

So a 100Ah battery isn’t enough information by itself.

You should always consider:

Voltage × Ah = nominal energy capacity

This is why a 48V 100Ah lithium battery is much larger in energy capacity than a 12V 100Ah battery.


12V vs 24V vs 48V Lithium Batteries

The voltage of the battery should match the requirements of your inverter/system.

12V lithium battery

Commonly used for:

  • small solar systems
  • small backup systems
  • lighting
  • small appliances

24V lithium battery

is good for:

  • medium-sized systems
  • some 2kVA–3kVA systems
  • larger battery banks

48V lithium battery

Very common for larger modern solar installations.

For example, a 5kWh battery does not mean your appliances will run for exactly 10 hours. what matters is the appliances load you have.

2. How many years will the battery last?

This depends on:

  • battery quality
  • number of cycles
  • depth of discharge
  • temperature
  • charging conditions
  • how the battery is used

A good lithium battery can potentially provide many years of service when properly installed and used within its specifications that is required.


How Long Can a 5kWh Lithium Battery Power a House?

This question is very important and I will try to use a simple example.

Suppose your appliances are using an average of:

500W

A 5kWh battery has approximately: 5,000Wh of nominal energy.

At a simple theoretical level:

5,000Wh ÷ 500W = 10 hours

But you should not expect exactly 10 hours in real life because there are losses from the inverter, battery and wiring, and you may not use the entire nominal battery capacity.

If your average load increases to:

1,000W

the theoretical runtime becomes roughly:

5,000Wh ÷ 1,000W = 5 hours

Again, actual runtime will be lower or different depending on the system.

This is why the question:

“How many hours can a 5kWh battery last?”

doesn’t have one answer.

It depends on what you are powering.
