Why Are Lithium Batteries More Expensive?
This is a question many people always ask, because if you compare a lithium battery with a traditional tubular battery, you may notice that lithium costs more.
But price alone doesn’t tell the whole story.
Lithium batteries have several advantages that makes it to stand out, and i will talk about it all now.
Longer cycle life
A good lithium battery can normally go through many more charge and discharge cycles than a traditional lead-acid battery when used correctly.
More usable energy
You generally don’t need to treat a lithium battery the same way you would a lead-acid battery when deciding how much of its capacity can be used.
Faster charging
Lithium batteries can often accept higher charging currents, provided the battery and system are designed for it.
Lower maintenance
Most modern LiFePO4 batteries do not require the type of regular maintenance associated with flooded lead-acid batteries.
Smaller and lighter
For the same useful energy storage, lithium can be considerably smaller and lighter than lead-acid batteries.

What Does 100Ah Mean on a Lithium Battery?
This is important question to ask because many people compare batteries simply by looking at the Ah number.
For example:
12V 100Ah
has a nominal energy capacity of:
12 × 100 = 1,200Wh
or approximately:
1.2kWh
While on the other hand:
48V 100Ah
battery has:
48 × 100 = 4,800Wh
or:
4.8kWh
So a 100Ah battery isn’t enough information by itself.
You should always consider:
Voltage × Ah = nominal energy capacity
This is why a 48V 100Ah lithium battery is much larger in energy capacity than a 12V 100Ah battery.
12V vs 24V vs 48V Lithium Batteries
The voltage of the battery should match the requirements of your inverter/system.
12V lithium battery
Commonly used for:
- small solar systems
- small backup systems
- lighting
- small appliances
24V lithium battery
is good for:
- medium-sized systems
- some 2kVA–3kVA systems
- larger battery banks
48V lithium battery
Very common for larger modern solar installations.
It can be suitable for:
- 5kVA systems
- 8kVA systems
- 10kVA systems
- larger hybrid systems
However, don’t assume every 5kVA inverter requires 48V. Always check the inverter specifications first to makes sure all matches well.
How Much Is a 5kWh Lithium Battery in Nigeria?
A 5kWh lithium battery can currently cost around:
₦700,000–₦1.2 million
depending on the brand and model.
A 5kWh battery is not automatically good for every 5kVA inverter.
Remember:
Inverter size and battery capacity are two different things.
A 5kVA inverter tells you roughly how much power the inverter can supply.
A 5kWh battery tells you how much energy the battery can store. So don’t get it wrong and always confirm the voltage too.
How Much Is a 10kWh Lithium Battery in Nigeria?
A 10kWh lithium battery may currently cost around:
₦1.4 million–₦2.3 million
This provides roughly twice the nominal energy storage of a 5kWh battery.
However, the actual backup time depends on how much power your appliances are using.
For example, a home using 500W will get a much longer backup period than a home using 2,000W.
How Long Can a Lithium Battery Last?
There are two different meanings of “how long.”
1. How long will it run my appliances?
This depends on:
- battery capacity
- appliance load
- inverter efficiency
- battery state of charge
- other system losses
For example, a 5kWh battery does not mean your appliances will run for exactly 10 hours. what matters is the appliances load you have.
2. How many years will the battery last?
This depends on:
- battery quality
- number of cycles
- depth of discharge
- temperature
- charging conditions
- how the battery is used
A good lithium battery can potentially provide many years of service when properly installed and used within its specifications that is required.
How Long Can a 5kWh Lithium Battery Power a House?
This question is very important and I will try to use a simple example.
Suppose your appliances are using an average of:
500W
A 5kWh battery has approximately: 5,000Wh of nominal energy.
At a simple theoretical level:
5,000Wh ÷ 500W = 10 hours
But you should not expect exactly 10 hours in real life because there are losses from the inverter, battery and wiring, and you may not use the entire nominal battery capacity.
If your average load increases to:
1,000W
the theoretical runtime becomes roughly:
5,000Wh ÷ 1,000W = 5 hours
Again, actual runtime will be lower or different depending on the system.
This is why the question:
“How many hours can a 5kWh battery last?”
doesn’t have one answer.
It depends on what you are powering.
You can use our Battery Calculator to estimate your backup requirements.
How Many Lithium Batteries Do I Need?

This depends on both your inverter and your desired backup time.
For example, you may have a 5kVA inverter but choose:
5kWh battery
or:
10kWh battery
or:
15kWh battery
The inverter can remain the same while the amount of stored energy changes.
If your goal is longer backup, increasing battery capacity may be more useful to you than going to buy a higher inverter.
Lithium Battery vs Tubular Battery
This is one of the most common comparisons when buying a solar system in Nigeria.
| Feature | Lithium | Tubular/Lead-Acid |
|---|---|---|
| Initial price | Higher | Lower |
| Weight | Lighter | Heavier |
| Charging speed | Usually faster | Usually slower |
| Maintenance | Low | Depends on type |
| Cycle life | Generally higher | Generally lower |
| Usable capacity | Generally higher | Generally lower |
| Space | Less | More |
| Long-term use | Often better suited | Can be good for lower-cost systems |
This doesn’t mean lithium is always the best choice.
Someone with a small budget may prefer tubular batteries because the initial cost is lower.
Someone who wants frequent daily cycling and longer battery life may prefer lithium. so, if you have good budget you can go for lithium.
What Is LiFePO4?
When people talk about lithium batteries for solar systems, they are often talking about LiFePO4, which means lithium iron phosphate.
LiFePO4 batteries are popular for solar applications because they offer:
- good cycle life
- good thermal stability
- high usable capacity
- low maintenance
- good performance for regular charging and discharging
But not every lithium battery sold in the market has the same quality.
The cells, BMS, construction and warranty all matter.
What Is a BMS?
BMS means Battery Management System.
It is an important part of a modern lithium battery.
The BMS helps protect the battery from conditions such as:
- overcharging
- over-discharging
- excessive current
- abnormal temperature
- cell imbalance
When buying a lithium battery, don’t only ask:
“How many kWh?”
Also ask about the BMS rating and protection features.
What Affects Lithium Battery Prices in Nigeria?
You may see two batteries with similar capacity can have very different prices.
Here are some reasons.
Brand
Well-known brands can cost more because of their reputation, support and warranty.
Battery capacity
A 10kWh battery will normally cost more than a 5kWh battery.
Voltage
12V, 24V and 48V batteries have different applications and configurations.
Cell quality
The quality and grade of the lithium cells can affect performance and lifespan.
BMS
A battery with a better BMS and communication features may cost more.
Warranty
A longer and more reliable warranty can also affect the price.
Communication
Some batteries can communicate with compatible inverters through protocols such as CAN or RS485.
This can help the inverter manage the battery more effectively.
Should I Buy One Large Lithium Battery or Several Smaller Batteries?
It depends on your system.
For example, instead of buying one large battery, someone might connect several smaller batteries together.
But you need to make sure:
- the batteries are compatible
- the inverter supports the configuration
- the batteries can communicate properly where required
- the manufacturer’s connection limits are followed
- cables and protection are correctly sized
Don’t connect batteries together simply because they have the same voltage.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Can I Use Lithium Batteries With My Existing Inverter?
Maybe.
Some older inverters were designed mainly for lead-acid batteries.
Modern hybrid inverters may support lithium batteries directly.
Before buying, check:
- battery voltage
- charging voltage
- maximum charging current
- discharge current
- BMS communication
- CAN/RS485 compatibility
- manufacturer’s supported battery list
If you are not sure, ask the inverter manufacturer or a qualified installer.
How Many Solar Panels Do I Need to Charge a Lithium Battery?
The battery capacity alone isn’t enough to answer this.
You also need to consider:
- how much energy you use each day
- how quickly you want to recharge
- panel wattage
- available sunlight
- MPPT capacity
- inverter efficiency
- system losses
For example, a 5kWh battery and a 10kWh battery will not necessarily need the same solar array.
Use our Solar Panel Calculator to estimate the solar panel capacity you may need.
Don’t Forget the Inverter
A lithium battery cannot power your household appliances by itself unless the system is designed for direct DC loads.
For a normal home solar system, you’ll normally need an inverter that is compatible with the battery.
If you haven’t chosen your inverter yet, you can use our Inverter Calculator to estimate the inverter size based on your appliances.

How Much Does a Complete Lithium Solar System Cost?
The price of a lithium battery is not the same as the price of a complete solar system.
A complete installation can include:
- lithium battery
- inverter
- solar panels
- mounting structure
- cables
- breakers
- surge protection
- isolators
- installation labour
- other accessories
For example, if someone says:
“A 5kWh lithium battery costs ₦900,000.”
That does not mean a complete solar system will cost ₦900,000.
You still need the inverter, panels and other equipment.
If you want to estimate the cost of the complete installation, use our Solar Installation Cost Calculator.
Is Lithium Battery Worth the Money?
For many people, yes—but it depends on how you use your solar system.
Lithium can make sense if you:
- use solar every day
- need long backup
- want faster charging
- want less maintenance
- want a longer-lasting battery
- have enough budget for the initial investment
Tubular or other lead-acid batteries may still make sense if:
- your budget is limited
- you don’t cycle the battery heavily
- you want a lower initial purchase price
The cheapest battery isn’t always the cheapest option over several years.
Before Buying a Lithium Battery
Check these things:
1. Capacity
Is it 2.5kWh, 5kWh, 10kWh or another size?
2. Voltage
Is it compatible with your inverter?
3. Battery chemistry
Is it LiFePO4 or another lithium chemistry?
4. BMS
What protection does the battery have?
5. Maximum charge and discharge current
Can it handle your inverter?
6. Communication
Can it communicate with your inverter if required?
7. Warranty
What warranty does the seller provide?
8. Installation
Is the battery being installed correctly with the required cables and protection?
Final Advice
When buying a lithium battery in Nigeria, don’t choose one simply because it has the highest Ah or the lowest price.
Look at the complete picture:
Capacity + voltage + battery chemistry + BMS + usable energy + cycle life + warranty + inverter compatibility + price.
